Inpatient echocardiograms not requiring Cardiology consultation

Physiologists are free to discuss *any* scan with the on-call Cardiologist, whether abnormal or not

Please enter requests on TrakCare, clearly stating the indication

Echo requests for scenarios other than listed below must be preceded by clinical consult from the on-call cardiology Registrar (9 am – 9 pm) or cardiology Consultant

If patient is able to attend Cardiology Department, kindly ring and arrange scan time BEFORE sending the patient down (ext 80888)

 

Infectious Diseases department (Consultant request ONLY)

  • Pyrexia of unknown origin
  • Staph aureus sepsis/bacteraemia
  • Suspected Kawasaki disease: first and follow-up scans at 2 weeks & 6 weeks

 

Oncology department

  • Ventricular function pre & post chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant

 

Neonatology department (2B)

  • Congenital diaphragmatic hernia – cardiac anatomy & assessment of function/PA pressure/PDA
  • Non-cardiac ECMO: cardiac anatomy (rule out TAPVD) and cannula position
  • Multiple congenital anomalies in absence of clinical signs of congenital heart disease (e.g.“pre-anaesthetic screening echo”) PICU
  • Assessment for pericardial effusion/suspected tamponade
  • Non-cardiac ECMO: cardiac anatomy and cannula position
  • Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon or Cardiac Intensivist request (NB: Echocardiography has no routine use in determining central venous line tip position or ascertaining patency of veins distal to SVC/IVC/innominate vein)

 

PICU

  • Assessment for pericardial effusion/suspected tamponade
  • Non-cardiac ECMO: cardiac anatomy and cannula position
  • Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon or Cardiac Intensivist request (NB: Echocardiography has no routine use in determining central venous line tip position or ascertaining patency of veins distal to SVC/IVC/innominate vein)

 

A polite reminder to other speciality Consultants: physiologists do not give clinical interpretation of scans, so if this is required, please seek Cardiology medical Consult in a timely fashion
