Speech and Language Therapy Service

Warning

The Speech and Language Therapy service at the Royal Hospital for Children works with babies, children and young people, and their families, with the assessment, diagnosis and support of eating, drinking and swallowing skills, as well as speech, language and communication skills.

We deliver an inpatient service within the hospital covering all wards, from neonatal to 18 years.

We are an integral part of  some specialised outpatient services.  These include a variety of Multi-disciplinary clinics, many that are national/regional services e.g Neonatal follow-up, Voice, Tracheostomy, Saliva control, and Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Clinics.

We offer an Outpatient Videofluoroscopy assessment, within the X-ray department for swallowing disorders.  Referrals to this service are usually made by community speech and language therapists.

Cleft and Craniofacial SLT Service

We are a regional speech and language therapy service providing outpatient care for babies, children and young people with cleft lip and palate and related craniofacial disorders. We work with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of speech and communication disorders related to velopharyngeal dysfunction (problems with how the palate moves) and oral structure with the aim of maximising speech skills and communication in daily life. We work as part of the multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial teams to provide a Scottish wide service.

Referrals can be made to our cleft SLT service by health care professionals within the hospital or from the community.

We see children within outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary cleft clinics in RHC and NHS Near Me (video call).

Speech assessments are carried out and families, community SLTs and cleft team clinicians will be given recommendations for therapy or further intervention. If further assessment is required this may include speech videofluoroscopy, nasendoscopy or ultrasound.

Referrals

Referrals from healthcare staff within the hospital to the Speech and Language Therapy Service are made via Trakcare.

Referrals can be made to our cleft SLT service by health care professionals within the hospital or from the community.
