Rheumatology acute referrals

Specialty: Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology - part of the Scottish Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology Network SPARN

We accept acute referrals of children and young people under the age of 16 year from across GGC and from other health board areas in Scotland via the SPARN network.

Acute referrals: We would wish to discuss acute referrals for the following:

  • Suspected Macrophage Activation Syndrome
  • Vasculitis
  • Systemic inflammatory disease such as Systemic JIA, SLE, Juvenile Dermatomyositis
  • Aggressive polyarthritis
  • Suspected infection/sepsis in children on immune suppression (biologics and steroids)
  • Existing patients with connective tissue disease who are unwell
  • SPARN has a guideline for the management of Chicken pox exposure but it is currently under review [last checked 12/08/24]

Acute referrals: Primary Care

Please discuss with Paediatric Rheumatology Registrar on 0141 452 5762 (9-5pm weekdays) or if unavailable the On call consultant who can be contacted 7 days per week via switchboard 0141 201 0000.

Acute referrals: Secondary Care within NHSGGC

Please discuss with Paediatric Rheumatology Registrar on 0141 452 5762 (9-5pm weekdays) or if unavailable the On call consultant who can be contacted 7 days per week via switchboard 0141 201 0000

Acute referrals: Secondary Care outwith NHSGGC

Referrals from outwith GGC should be discussed with the local SPARN network clinician or if they are not available the On call Paediatric Rheumatology consultant who can be contacted via GGC switchboard 0141 201 0000.
