Physiotherapy referral guidance

GPs can refer patients to paediatric physiotherapy electronically through SciGateway if they meet the following criteria;

  • Child is under 14 years old
  • Have a Greater Glasgow postcode
  • Have a musculoskeletal complaint – peripheral joint/neck/back pain
  • Have sustained a soft tissue injury
  • Baby with torticollis/head preference +/- Sternomastoid thickening

Conditions NOT appropriate for paediatric physiotherapy at RHC in the first instance

  • Scoliosis – should be referred to paediatric orthopaedics.
  • Possible normal variant (toe walking, varus/valgus lower limb deformity/intoeing) – should be discussed with paediatric physiotherapy at the local child development centre.
  • Plagiocephaly - should be discussed with paediatric physiotherapy at the local child development centre.
