Notification of diseases to Public Health

If you see a child with a SUSPECTED notifiable disease (see list below) contact:

DURING OFFICE HOURS: The Health Protection Nurse at West House, Gartnaval Royal (201 4917)

or

OUT OF HOURS: On Call Public Health Doctor via Gartnavel Royal Switchboard (211 3600)


Give them the details of the patient and they will follow the patient up (including any outstanding microbiology results).

You DO NOT need to wait until microbiology results are available before contacting Public Health.

Notifiable Diseases / Organisms

Urgent Rare but also Urgent Within office hours
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Clinical syndrome due to E. coli O157 or other toxigenic E. coli (STEC)
  • Haemolytic uraemic syndrome
  • Haemophilus influenzae group B
  • Typhoid / paratyphoid
  • Invasive group A strep
  • Clusters or outbreaks
  • Measles
  • Cholera
  • Clostridium botulinum
  • Diphtheria
  • Anthrax
  • Avian influenza
  • Plague
  • Rabies
  • Viral haemorrhagic fevers
  • Mumps
  • Rubella (confirmed)
  • Pertussis (confirmed)
  • Acute viral hepatitis A, B, C
  • Food poisoning
  • Tuberculosis
