Thyrotoxicosis in the neonate (Management)

*Cord bloods can be sent – please label as cord bloods. If not available then send bloods from baby. Thyroid function tests required 1ml in Lithium Heparin Bottle (small green)

** Features of Hyperthyroidism

  • Head and Neck
    - Goitre, periorbital oedema, exopthalmos
  • CNS
    - Irritable, jittery, poor sleeping , microcephaly (Head <5th centile)
  • CVS
    - Tachycardia, arrhythmias, flushing, sweating, hypertension
  • GI
    - Increased appetite, diarrhoea / vomiting, excess weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly
  • Other
    - jaundice
    - bruising and petechiae (thrombocytopenia)
